Embracing Diversity in STEM: Insights from Sarah Cosgriff’s Journey

Pride is celebrated every year in June. It is a month-long observance dedicated to the celebration and history of the LGBTQ+ community and commemorating their contributions. Each year, Blue Yonder’s BYourself, our associate-led LGBTQ+ Business Interest Group, hosts a variety of activities aimed at awareness and education. We recently hosted Sarah Cosgriff, an award-winning science communicator and advocate for diversity and inclusion in STEM, based in the U.K. Her journey as a queer woman in science offers valuable insights into the importance of representation and the transformative power of diversity in organizations. Some of the valuable lessons we learned from her session include:

1. The Importance of Representation

Sarah emphasized the critical role of visibility for LGBTQ+ individuals in STEM. She shared her experiences of working to improve gender balance and foster inclusivity in educational programs. Her initiative, “STEM for Queer Youth,” highlights the need for role models who can inspire and support young LGBTQ+ individuals in pursuing careers in science.

2. How to Stay Resilient and Overcome Barriers

Throughout her career, Sarah has encountered and addressed various barriers that LGBTQ+ individuals face in STEM fields. She discussed how older laws and/or regulations still impact our culture now, as well as societal norms and assumptions that often hinder inclusivity and the importance of being ourselves and encouraging others to do the same to create a more welcoming environment for all. For this, Sarah drew from her experiences as an asexual person.

3. Building Inclusive Networks

Sarah highlighted the significance of building supportive networks and communities. She mentioned various LGBTQ+ STEM networks, such as Pride in STEM and oSTEM, which provide platforms for individuals to connect, share experiences, and support each other’s career progression.

4. The Power of Allyship

Active allyship plays a crucial role in fostering an inclusive workplace. Sarah shared her experiences of being supported by colleagues and the impact of allyship in her journey. She encouraged individuals in senior roles to advocate for others, ensuring equal opportunities and career advancement for LGBTQ+ colleagues.

5. Continuous Learning and Advocacy

Sarah’s talk underscored the importance of continuous learning and advocacy for diversity and inclusion. She urged organizations to stay informed about LGBTQ+ issues and to implement inclusive practices and policies that reflect the changing societal context.

Sarah Cosgriff’s journey is a testament to the power of diversity and representation in STEM. Her insights remind us that embracing diversity not only enriches our organizations but also strengthens the broader scientific community. As we celebrate Pride Month, let us commit to fostering an inclusive environment where everyone can thrive.
