Digital planning and automation help Ingredion improve forecasting and customer service

企業概要

With over $8 billion in annual sales, Ingredion serves more than 18,000 customers in 120 countries. Based in Illinois, this leading global ingredient solutions provider turns grains, fruits, vegetables, and other plant-based materials into value-added ingredient solutions for the food, beverage, animal nutrition, brewing, and industrial markets.

ビジネスの課題

Ingredion was experiencing strong fluctuations in customer demand across its 60 product segments and thousands of worldwide customers. The company was challenged to manage its customer forecasts and inventory levels and achieve its ambitious targets for on-time, in-full deliveries. Ingredion sought to mature its existing digital platform to gain better visibility into its data, thereby enhancing decision-making within the company. By dedicating efforts to improve and increase adoption, it aimed to extract more value from the platform.

ソリューション

In 2019, Ingredion implemented Blue Yonder Demand Planning, Supply Planning, Fulfillment, and Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP) across its global operations, all running on the Blue Yonder platform powered by Microsoft Azure. This deployment, along with significant investments in digital capabilities, enabled Ingredion to extract tremendous value from the system. By 2023, the company realized tangible benefits, including 16% reduction in global inventories, a 2% improvement in forecast accuracy, and a substantial enhancement in customer service levels.

“We now have all our customers’ demands at our fingertips. We have clear visibility of the flow of materials in our organization; we know what the resource utilizations are for our entire network, which allows us to look for network optimization opportunities that not only improve efficiencies, but also customer service.”

How Ingredion optimized supply chain global planning

Optimizing inventory to accurately match supply with volatile demand is challenging, but it is especially tough when producing thousands of products across 60 diverse segments to serve 18,000 global customers in 120 countries. This was Ingredion in 2023.

The company’s planners knew they needed to access and analyze real-time data to sense shifts in demand and then immediately re-align forecasts, supply and inventory plans, and sales and operations plans.

The Blue Yonder center of excellence (COE) alongside Ingredion’s recently created Global Digital Operations Team worked effortlessly on development of visualization tools that enabled strong cross-functional and cross-regional collaboration, as well as exceptional execution. It also required Blue Yonder’s solutions to accommodate many complexities, including a range of inventory turnover speeds — from fast-moving to nonmoving — as well as tightly constrained specialty assets and warehouse space.

主なメリット
In 2023, Ingredion saw several benefits, including a 2% improvement in demand forecast accuracy and a reduction of global inventory levels by 16%. The company also implemented strategic sourcing changes that contributed to significant savings globally. Better visibility has helped Ingredion boost its service levels: a 30% improvement to service levels internally to its affiliate offices and a 15% improvement in service levels to domestic customers.

“Our partnership with Blue Yonder is incredibly valuable to us. Its solutions have been instrumental in modernizing our approach to demand planning, supply chain visibility and inventory optimization. The Blue Yonder team genuinely cares about our success and shows an unwavering commitment to our satisfaction,” says Carneiro.

These rapid results are a testament to the success of Ingredion’s digital transformation. Blue Yonder’s reporting and analysis capabilities improve visibility, provide insights into changing conditions, and help track key performance indicators (KPIs). Ingredion can analyze larger volumes of data more efficiently, so planners can identify trends, patterns, and potential risks in its operations much faster.

Ingredion is in the early stages of development of its in-house machine learning forecast and is looking forward to integrating it with Blue Yonder. Also, Ingredion is exploring the capabilities of Blue Yonder’s Cognitive Planning solutions to take supply and demand planning to the next level. Whatever the future brings, Ingredion has a formula for success.
